Responsibilities included developing curriculum for the course pulling from Calculus II, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. For a final project students chose a scientific journal article, relating to their field of study or area of interest, and gave technology based presentations and written reports connecting the math used in the article to that studied in class. Additional responsibilities included choosing an appropriate textbook, planning and conducting lectures, holding office hours and review sessions, writing and grading homework and exam problems, evaluating final projects, and assigning final grades.
M340: Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations
Responsibilities included planning and conducting lectures, holding office hours and review sessions, reviewing and submitting exam questions and grading exams, grading homework, creating and grading Maple labs, and assigning final grades.
M495: Independent Study for TREE Course for FEScUE
Responsibilities included planning and conducting lectures, writing and grading homework assignments, and holding office hours. This was a special topics course for students in the Flexible and Extendable Scientific Undergraduate Experience (FEScUE) program bringing together students from various disciplines including biology, statistics, mathematics, genetics, and chemistry. Topics in- cluded probability theory, stochastic differential equations, sensitivity analysis, and programming in Matlab.

In this course, calculus is developed through connections to discrete data sets often collected in a lab setting. Explicit connections to discrete and continuous biological models are introduced and long term behavior studied. Weekly readings of scientific journal articles are included based on material studied in class. Responsibilities included planning and conducting lectures, holding office hours and review sessions, writing of quizzes, grading of quizzes, homework, and exams and assigning final grades.

Topics covered include: Least-Squares, Markov Chains, Jordan Form, the Power Method, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), numerical integration (Gaussian quadrature, Simpson’s rule), QR decomposition, and GMRES. There is a significant computational component to the course as well. Students apply the methods covered to real-world X-ray tomography data and photographic images.
